There were good times in September. On the last weekend of the month, David and Martha Hooper hosted the second annual trip to the Retama race track in Selma. David is the Executive Director of the Texas Thorobred Racing Association. He tried his best to make it a district affair and we did get several people from the Round Rock noon club to join us. We departed Georgetown via motor coach. On the trip down David discussed many of the business angles of the racing business and told a few tails about certain horses or jockeys. He then taught us the ins and outs of reading the racing form and gave us a few tips on the evening’s races.

When we arrived we went directly to the stables where we looked at some horses and talked with one of the top trainers at Retama. We then went to the paddock and interviewed the track’s top jockey. From there we were whisked off to the VIP room where we enjoyed a prime rib buffet and a great view of the track. We had a teller in our room so placing bets was a snap. One race was named in honor of Sertoma and we all went down to the winner’s circle and had our picture taken with the horse and jockey. We also went to the steward’s office and the stewards explained their duties and their equipment and then we watched them actually perform during a race. Folks, this is the only way to go to the track.

As we head into October the club is positioning itself. Project Share, now operated out of the Caring Place, is looking for help with their barrels. Distribution is scheduled for the last full week in October.

The Sun City Cyclists are leading the bike rally for 2007. We will be fulfilling the same duties as in the past but we won’t need to take as much of a leadership role next year. Mike Cook reports that things are progressing nicely.

Mike Cook has been working on a sponsorship package and has sent copies to various members. He asks that you edit them and advise him of any changes you would like to see. This document is going to be our main source of information to support our efforts to convince local businesses to support our efforts. To raise the amounts of money we need to support all of our causes can only be raised through contributions from the business community. The thing the clubs that are fairing well financially have in common is the ability to solicit contributions.

Jim Wilson is not only our club speech and hearing director, but he is also the Chairman of Speech and Hearing on the district staff. He is working a deal with Round Rock that I think you will be interested in. More next month.

Jim is also working diligently on the Texas Mission of Mercy project. He has been the Sertoma liaison on this thing and has really tied things together. He has secured a great location at the event and is busy staffing it with audiologists. He needs help from the club to man the registration area and keep order. We are also going to have a SAFEEARS booth set up and we will be giving presentations in the waiting area. Please give Jim a hand.

As I said last month, Round Rock is having their Casino night on October 27 and Ann and Bruce Shove were at our club meeting on August 31st to tell us that they would welcome any of our members who would like to be dealers. Dealing is fun and if you don’t want to do that you may want to join the party as a gambler.

Onward to October
