July was a big month for the Georgetown Sertoma Club. The main item of business was the giant 4th of July celebration in San Gabriel park. The weather this year was semi cooperative and the crowds were large and well behaved. Some neighboring communities were forced to cancel their fireworks due to rain and lightning but we were fortunate enough to squeeze them in. It looks like the net profit from the event will be somewhere between $1500.00 and $2000.00. A big thanks to all who worked so hard to make this a meaningful event for our community.
On a sad note, General Neasman lost a sister. She had suffered a massive stroke and passed away late in the month. Our thoughts and prayers have been with him.
Georgetown Sertoma had one representative at the International convention in Omaha. Jim Thompson, who is also the district governor, attended. He will be the guest speaker on Thursday, August 10 to share his stories.
The club’s yearly awards banquet will be held on 7pm Thursday, August 17 at the Georgetown Country Club. The cost will be $15.00 per person and include the meal and gratuities. Contact Paul Hooper if you plan to attend.
We will be doing highway cleanup again at 7:30am on Saturday, August 8. We will be meeting at the First Texas Bank on Williams Drive just past the Sun City entrance. Contact Ellen Dutkiewicz for further details.
President Ron Heine is planning to hold the club leadership meeting this month. The time, date, and location are still under consideration. This is a very important meeting for all new officers. Please plan to attend. This meeting will set the tone for the entire year.
Paul Hooper has agreed to help Alycia Heeneman with the Serteen club this year. We are looking forward to a great year from the Serteens.
Mike Cook is working on a new package for sponsorships. He plans to have a section on what Sertoma is all about, and a section on what Georgetown Sertoma Club means to this community, and a section on different levels of sponsorship. If you have any ideas along those lines, please contact Mike. Round Rock morning club was able to raise $41,000.00 last year so that type of thing is still quite possible.
The Sun City Cyclists will be the lead club for the Bike Rally next year and we will still need to be very active in supporting the event. This has become our biggest fund raiser in a very short period of time and there is potential for greater rewards
In the future.
Jim Wilson is working with Lone Star Circle of Care to obtain a device to check for hearing problems in newborns. This is the same type of device that we were able to provide for the hospital a couple of years ago. Jim is writing the grant application to International at this time. He reports that 4000 children per year are checked for hearing problems in Georgetown alone. We can be proud of the part we play in that effort.
November 10 and 11 are the dates for the Texas Mission of Mercy this year. It will be held, once again, at the Dell Diamond. Our club needs to play a major role in the. Jim Thompson will also be purchasing a SAFEEARS kit for the district and will have the booth set up near the hearing screening booth.
Doug Riggs has been in contact with the American Hearing Center in Temple and has brought back several (8 I think) hearing aids for the SHARP program. Through his efforts there are now two collection sites in Temple. Doug, by the way, has taken a new job in Morgan City, LA and, while he will still be a member, will not be able to be as active as he has been. We all need to let him know how much we appreciate all of the hard work he has put in for the club.
Bill Marsh is working with the school district on the national heritage program. His plans are for our club to do it’s own publicity this year. Last year we left that up to the school district and the participation was minimal.
Chris Mealy has agreed to be our club’s resident agent.
