August was another great month in Georgetown. We had our famous highway cleanup on the 5th followed by the always great breakfast at the Dutkiewicz kitchen. It was pretty well attended with even a couple of guest pickers. George and Sharon Waddell were nice enough to help out even though they are not members. We need to get them to fix that “not members” thing. It was a hot day but we were done early so we escaped the worst of it.
We had our yearly Sertoman of the Year banquet at the Georgetown Country Club on August 17. Those recognized for perfect attendance were:
Jim Wilson, Alan Munson, Roger Taylor, Alycia Heeneman, and Ellen Dutkiewicz.
Jim Wilson was further recognized for 26 years of perfect attendance. David Hooper received a nice plaque as outgoing president and a ceremony was performed to transfer his president’s pin to Ron Heine. David was then presented with a past president’s pin. The star of the evening was our newest Sertoman of the Year, Roger Taylor. Roger had some gracious things to say in acceptance. The evening was well orchestrated and Roy Holliday present a number of entertaining tongue in cheek awards to an array of members. I do believe a good time was had by all.
Paul Hooper has agreed to help Alycia with the Serteens this coming year. Paul is really stepping up and taking on whatever we need for him to do these days. He has also agreed to be the district treasurer. Thanks Paul.
Ron Heine held a club leadership meeting but I don’t have any of the details on that. It should be safe to say that all of the incoming officers now understand their responsibilities. We have a great crew this year and it should be a good one.
Doug Riggs has taken a job in Louisiana and is spending about half of his time there and half at home. He is an active member and a terrific asset to our club. We hope he doesn’t stray too far for too long. Fortunately (for us) Patty is still here full time. I don’t know if everyone realizes it, but she is the main reason this club works the way it does. She keeps an eye on everything and we all need to tell her how much we appreciate it.
The Sun City Cyclists are leading the bike rally for 2007. We will be fulfilling the same duties as in the past but we won’t need to take as much of a leadership role next year. Thanks again the Rene Bade and Pat and Mike Cook for their tremendous leadership this year. This thing has become on overnight success, thanks to a lot of members’ hard work. The first meeting for next year’s event is at Jim Bakken’s house in Sun City. The address is 107 Lone Star Drive. From Williams Drive turn right on Whispering Wind and keep going till you get to Lone Star on your right. He is the last house on the first block.
In the speech and hearing part of the business, Doug Riggs and David Hooper have been bringing in handfuls of hearing aids for the SHARP program from the Temple collection sites. There are two sites in Temple and they have really been paying off.
Jim Wilson works tirelessly on speech and hearing and he is also on the district cabinet with speech and hearing responsibilities. He needs a lot of support right now for the upcoming Texas Mission of Mercy event on November 10 and 11 a the Dell Diamond. He has been passing around a sign up sheet at the club meetings. Please give him a hand when you can.
The Highland Lakes Club is holding their David Walter Memorial golf tournament on September 16 at Packsaddle Country Club in Kingsland. The entry fee is $75.00 and includes a catfish dinner. There will be a chance to win $1million dollars for a hole in one. There are other great hole in one prizes on other par 3’s.
Round Rock noon club is also having a tournament at White Wing in Sun City golf course on Friday, October 20. This is their bone marrow benefit tournament that they have been hosting for the past 12 years. This is their last year, as they are disbanding and they are hoping another club or a group from the district will pick it up.
Round Rock is having their Casino night on October 27 and Ann and Bruce Shove were at our club meeting on August 31st to tell us that they would welcome any of our members who would like to be dealers. Dealing is fun and if you don’t want to do that you may want to join the party as a gambler??
The big news is that David Hooper is again hosting a trip to Retama Park to the horse races. This is a great adventure where we get to go behind the scenes and meet the people and see the things that make it all happen as well as attending the races. He is getting a quite a few reservations already, including several from Round Rock. This is a great social event. See David for details.
August was a great month for us. Let’s do it again in September.
