Club News

It was another great month for Georgetown Sertoma. We elected new club officers, see the list above for details on that. We also held a very successful bike rally. Most of our members participated in this event, but we need to single out Renee Bade for her tremendous leadership on this great project. The final total of riders was 411. The weather was windy but beautiful even though we were ravaged by storms the night before. I am sure that those storms kept several people from registering the morning of the event or it would have been even bigger. Our scholarship sponsorship will benefit greatly from this event.

Several of our members attended the regional convention in Lafayette, Louisiana. Members in attendance were: David and Martha Hooper, Russell and Ellen Dutkiewicz, Paul Hooper, and Jim Thompson. This was the first convention for the new Heart of America Region. 35 clubs from Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri were in attendance. The Heart of Texas district was represented by Georgetown, Round Rock morning club, Austin, Northwest Austin, San Marcos, and Waco.

Georgetown won several district awards including:

Club Excellence
Club Attendance
Best Display

We also won 2nd place for our display at the regional level.

The District Awards were presented to the following:
Service to Mankind-Florence Panziano (nominated by Austin Sertoma)
Sertoman of the Year-Mike Parker of the Round Rock morning club
Serteen of the Year-Shannon Elander of (Round Rock morning)
The Regional Awards were presented to:
Sertoman of the Year-Bob Middlebrook Downtown Fort Worth Club
Serteen of the Year-Shannon Elander (Round Rock morning club)
Serteen Advisor of the Year-Janet Allen (Oklahoma)

Delegates from the district conducted the following business at the convention:
-Raised the dues per club member $1.00 per quarter (from $3.00 to $4.00
Per quarter) to cover growing deficits.
-Agreed that there will be a Fall District Conference in 2006.
-Passed a budget for 2006/2007 encompassing expenses totaling $4054.00
-Elected Jim Thompson from the Georgetown Club as district governor for a
two year term.

Delegates to the regional convention conducted the following business at the convention:
-Defeated the resolution to raise International dues by $1.00 to cover
expenses of the International Director.
-Passed the resolution that regional conventions be held at a location within
250 miles of Fort Smith, Arkansas on International election years (odd
numbered years) to enable greater participation by all clubs.
-2007 Regional Convention in Springfield, MO
-2008 Regional Convention hosted by Southside Tulsa, OK

We had great speakers in April including Kirk Dressendorf of the Round Rock Express baseball organization, Shannon O’Neal, our National Heritage Essay winner, and our own David Hooper who presented a delightful presentation on the Kentucky Derby.

The 4th of July is rapidly approaching and we need to seriously focus on this project. The whole club is needed for this one if we are to pull it off.

See you at the meetings.
